Services
In 1755, my great, great, great, great grandfather, Samuel Stockwell, commenced his seven year apprenticeship to become a weaver of broadcloth in the County of Yorkshire.
His son John, after whom I am named, followed him into the same trade of weaving and we still have the indentures to witness their apprenticeships.
Broadcloth weavers became the first weavers of carpets in the United Kingdom.
All my ancestors were involved in some way or another in the world of carpets: my great-grandfather and my grandfather (another Samuel) founding SJ Stockwell & Co in the North of England.
Over the many years we have been creating beautiful carpets and rugs; the quality of our work has been recognised internationally and has led to a long list of prestigious clients and interior decorators.
We are proud that many of our customers have been specifying our carpets for decades.
Royal Pavillion in Brighton was painstakingly recreated by Craigie Stockwell, using old documents and fragments of the original.
We also carpeted the Guardian Royal Exhange Building in the City of London, where our work can be found in many City Livery Halls.
We set up our first production in the middle of rural Ayrshire in Scotland.
It was in this old barn in Craigie Village that gave not only the first part of our trading name but also the birth of our commitment to, and love of, the environment in which we work and live.
This is a quiet place, with the sound of sheep grazing in the background, green grass, hardly any traffic and beautiful, undulating, Scottish countryside.
It was pure coincidence that John Stockwell was born in 'Craigie Nursing Home' in Broughty Ferry near Dundee!.
Art Deco was one of the most fertile periods of rug and carpet design all around the world, with designers in America, and all over Europe: England, France, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Belgium and everywhere embraced this great new art form.
I am really so pleased and cannot thank you and the team enough for making the rug that I envisioned.
Aubusson is a town in France which, over the centuries, has traditionally made hand made carpets and which were used by the Royal Courts in France to make carpets for the Royal palaces when the demand for these carpets exceeded the capacity of the specialist factories in and around Paris.
Tapestries were also produced in Aubusson and they eventually became the main focus of production which led to the word 'Aubusson' to become the generic term that represented both tapestry style carpets and the specialist design style associated with these carpets and rugs.
